What you will be able to do

Skills you add to your Herizon profile when you finish: Work Culture Adaptation.

  • How Finnish workplaces often communicate and decide, and what a manager may expect from you
  • What your employment contract should say and what a fixed-term contract means
  • How the trial period (koeaika) works, and what your rights are during it
  • Why Finland has no minimum wage law and how collective agreements (TES) set your minimums
  • What unions and unemployment funds do, and how to decide whether to join
  • Working hours, overtime, holiday and sick leave in general terms
  • Where to get help if your pay is wrong, your contract is broken, or you face discrimination

Who it is for

International professionals working in Finland or about to start their first Finnish job. Everything applies whether you came for the job, for family, or for studies.

The situation you work through

Priya, a UX designer from Bengaluru, spends her first weeks at Lumo Software in Tampere: meetings, feedback, lunch, her contract, a sick day, overtime and holidays, and a payslip that is wrong.

Your practice task

Build your own workplace card from your real contract and collective agreement (or an offer or job ad, with the questions you will ask). Write six facts: your trial period and its end date, your collective agreement, your weekly hours, your holiday days and bonus, your sick-note rule, and your union or unemployment fund. Then write one clear sentence for a moment where you would normally soften or hint. Submit the six facts with any questions still open, your sentence, and one sentence on what happened when you said it.
