How page 1 starts: What bookkeepers do in Finland

Joana, Riikka, Harri, Haapa Tilit Oy and Routa Pyörät Oy are a worked example, not real people or companies.

It takes about 25 min of reading, plus exercises, a short quiz and a practice task. It teaches Bookkeeping, Accounting and VAT. Pass the short quiz at the end to get a certificate.

What you will be able to do

Who it is for

Anyone who has worked in finance abroad, or in office administration, and wants to work with books in Finland. No accounting degree is needed.

The situation you work through

Joana, an accounting assistant at Haapa Tilit Oy, a small accounting firm in Tampere, books January for the bike shop Routa Pyörät Oy: a sales invoice of 1,255 euros, a parts bill of 7,530 euros and a VAT return of 2,550 euros, finds a 15 euro gap in the bank reconciliation, runs payroll for 2 mechanics and closes the month for her senior Riikka.

Your practice task

Keep the books for one invented month of a small business you design, with no real company or person. Write a chart of at least 8 accounts. Book 8 transactions as balanced entries with account numbers: at least one sales invoice, one purchase bill with VAT, one bill without VAT, card sales and one salary. Work out the VAT return at the general rate: VAT on sales, VAT on purchases and the amount to pay. Do a bank reconciliation with one difference you planted and the entry that fixes it. Write a payroll note for one employee: gross pay, withholding from the tax card and what the employer pays on top. Add a close checklist. Submit it as one page or one spreadsheet.
