A look inside the course

  • Step 1: Polkuri's job ad asks for SQL or spreadsheets, clear communication and a link to a portfolio
  • Step 2: A recruiter clicks the link, reads the top of the README, looks at one chart and reads the answer
  • Step 3: The six parts: a question, data with its licence, a cleaning log, a fair analysis, three charts and a memo
How page 1 starts: What a portfolio project proves

Daniela lives in Espoo. She worked in retail operations before she moved to Finland, and she has finished the SQL and data analytics courses. Now she reads an ad from Polkuri, a made-up Helsinki company with a bike-commuting app. The ad asks for SQL or spreadsheets, clear communication and a link to a portfolio. She has the skills. She has nothing to link to.

It takes about 37 min of reading, plus exercises, a short quiz and a practice task. It teaches Exploratory Data Analysis and Data Storytelling. Pass the short quiz at the end to get a certificate.

What you will be able to do

  • How to choose a question that open data can answer
  • How to find open data, check its licence and credit the source
  • How to read, clean and join two files, and log every fix
  • How to compare fairly and say what your numbers cannot show
  • How to draw three honest charts and write a one-page memo
  • How to publish your work, put it on your CV and LinkedIn, and talk it through in an interview

The situation you work through

Daniela, a job seeker in Espoo, wants a junior analyst role at Polkuri, a made-up Helsinki bike-commuting app company. With two invented practice files (29 counter rows, 28 weather rows) she asks how much rain cuts weekday riders, cleans and joins the files, finds 2,615 riders on rainy weekdays against 3,472 on dry ones, makes three honest charts and a one-page memo, publishes it on GitHub and walks Polkuri's interviewer through it.

Your practice task

Build one portfolio project on open data, Finnish or other, that you are allowed to share. Write one question tied to a job you want and fix your definitions first. Keep the raw files, clean a copy and log at least three fixes. Answer the question in a spreadsheet or in SQL with a fair comparison, and say how many rows each number rests on. Make three charts with titles that state the finding and a source line, write a one-page memo with the answer, three findings and one limit, and publish it as a public GitHub README or a view-only Google Sheet with every source and licence credited. Add a CV line and a two-minute STAR walk-through. Submit the public link and a short summary, with no personal data inside.
