A look inside the course

  • Step 1: A recruiter finds and chooses people, a coordinator schedules, records and hands over, an HR manager decides policy
  • Step 2: The same work appears as HR coordinator, HR assistant, recruitment coordinator and people operations coordinator
  • Step 3: Recruit, contract, onboard, work, offboard: Mateo comes in at the start and Sari leaves at the end
How page 1 starts: The HR coordinator: what the job is

Zainab works in the HR team of Kelova, a company of 160 people in Espoo that makes control software for district heating. The HR team has 3 people. Payroll is run by an accounting firm outside the company. Zainab, Petri, Mateo, Sari and Kelova are a scenario, not real people. In this course you follow Zainab through one hire and one exit.

It takes about 28 min of reading, plus exercises, a short quiz and a practice task. It teaches Onboarding, HR Operations and employment law basics. Pass the short quiz at the end to get a certificate.

  • An interview day schedule and a competency-based question set
  • An onboarding plan with an owner for every item
  • A payroll change list and a retention table for employee records

The situation you work through

Zainab, a made-up HR coordinator at Kelova, a made-up Espoo company of 160 people that makes control software for district heating, runs one hire and one exit: she schedules 4 finalists for a panel of 3, writes probing questions, turns the offer into Mateo's contract with a 4 month trial, sets up his hours and holiday records, onboards him in 4 phases, hands changes to payroll before the cut-off on the 10th, sets retention for employee data, and offboards Sari after 7 years.

Your practice task

Build an HR coordinator pack for one hire and one leaver, real or imagined. Write an interview day schedule for 4 finalists and the invitation email. Write 3 competency-based questions with two probes each. Write an onboarding plan in 4 phases with an owner for every item. Write one month's payroll change list with a new starter, a change and a leaver. Write a retention table for 6 employee records with the period, the reason and the act and section, or 'company decision' with your reason. Write an offboarding checklist with the notice period and the final pay items. Use no real person's data. Submit it as one document.

Key topics

  1. The HR coordinator: what the job is
  2. Interview day logistics and the candidate experience
  3. Competency-based questions that get evidence
