Getting started with Claude Code

Claude Code is an agentic coding tool that lives in your terminal, IDE, desktop app, and browser - it reads your codebase, edits files across many places at once, runs commands, and opens pull requests. This hands-on course takes you from install to your first shipped change and into the features that make it a teammate: the agent loop, plan mode, reviewing diffs, working with Git, giving it context with CLAUDE.md, keeping control with permissions, custom slash commands, sub-agents, connecting your tools with MCP, and automating with hooks and skills.

What you will be able to do

Skills you add to your Herizon profile when you finish: Claude Code, AI-assisted Development.

  • Claude Code running in a project of your own, and one real change reviewed and shipped
  • A way to ask for a change that says what, where and how to check
  • The habit of planning a bigger change and reading every diff
  • A CLAUDE.md, permissions and a first command that fit your project
  • A clear idea of what sub-agents, tool connections and hooks are for

Who it is for

Time per page: 15 to 30 minutes Whole course: 4 to 6 hours (15 pages, at your own speed) This is for you if you are: - Learning to code and want a patient helper that you still review - A founder or marketer who edits a small site or script - A developer who has not used an agent that works in your project yet - Changing career and building a first real project You need no senior experience. It helps to have a small project in a folder, ideally on GitHub, and to have used a terminal a little. ---

The situation you work through

Venla, a beginner in Tampere, uses Claude Code to build and change one small project, reading-list: a first question, a mark-as-read button, a planned sort, a branch and commit, and the notes and controls around them, reviewing every diff.

Your practice task

Use Claude Code to ship one real, small change to a project you have on GitHub - a bug fix, a tiny feature, or tests for an untested function. Work on a branch, review the diff before you accept it, then have Claude Code commit only the files for this task and open a pull request. Submit the link to that pull request, your first prompt word for word, and three sentences on what the change does, what you corrected in the diff, and your next step.
