Mei used to work in a lab and taught herself to code. Her first job is in a team of five in Helsinki that builds an appointment-booking service. Mei and the team are a worked example, not real people. Over three weeks she picks up a bug, opens a pull request, gets reviewed and is asked to join a stand-by rota. You follow her and then do the same steps for your own job hunt.
It takes about 26 min of reading, plus exercises, a short quiz and a practice task. It teaches Software Development, Code Review and Software Testing. Pass the short quiz at the end to get a certificate.
What you will be able to do
- A clear picture of how a team works from ticket to merged pull request
- A habit of writing a failing test first and answering review comments
- The facts about stand-by under the Working Time Act, and the questions to ask
- A sheet of what five Finnish ads ask for in your target role
- A pull request you can link on your CV
Who it is for
Time per page: 10 to 15 minutes Whole course: about 2 hours, at your own speed This is for you if you are: - Changing career into software and want to know what the work is like - Learning to code and preparing for your first junior application - Unsure how AI tools and interviews fit together You need the basics of Git. If branches and pull requests are new, take the Git & GitHub course first. For AI coding tools, see the AI coding assistants course on GitHub Copilot and OpenAI Codex. ---
The situation you work through
Mei, a career switcher who taught herself to code, joins a team of five in Helsinki and spends three weeks picking up a bug ticket, opening a pull request, answering review, adding a failing test, being asked to join a stand-by rota and telling a friend how she was hired.
Your practice task
Read five current Finnish ads for your target role and record what they ask for. Fix one small bug in a project of your own with a failing test and a pull request that says what changed, why and how to check it. Write three questions you would ask an employer about stand-by pay and AI tools. Submit the ad sheet, the pull request link with a paragraph on what the test showed, and the three questions.
Key topics
- A ticket on Monday
